Removing if/when from joy

As I read James 1:2-8, I am convicted of my “if” statements regarding joy.  I currently believe the following:

  • I’ll have joy if I have a sense of purpose at work
  • I’ll have joy if others respect and admire me at work
  • I’ll have joy if I accomplish a lot at work
  • I’ll have joy when I get as much sleep as I want
  • I’ll have joy when I don’t have something scheduled for every night of the week
  • I’ll have joy when I have time for myself
  • I’ll have joy when Billy and I make time for each other
  • I’ll have joy when I don’t have to feel guilty about spending money
  • I’ll have joy when everything in my life falls into place perfectly
  • I’ll have joy when I can feel balanced

Instead, I should believe this:

  • I have joy because of Jesus
  • I’ll have more joy through wisdom and faith in him
