As I read James 1:2-8, I am convicted of my “if” statements regarding joy. I currently believe the following:
- I’ll have joy if I have a sense of purpose at work
- I’ll have joy if others respect and admire me at work
- I’ll have joy if I accomplish a lot at work
- I’ll have joy when I get as much sleep as I want
- I’ll have joy when I don’t have something scheduled for every night of the week
- I’ll have joy when I have time for myself
- I’ll have joy when Billy and I make time for each other
- I’ll have joy when I don’t have to feel guilty about spending money
- I’ll have joy when everything in my life falls into place perfectly
- I’ll have joy when I can feel balanced
Instead, I should believe this:
- I have joy because of Jesus
- I’ll have more joy through wisdom and faith in him
